We’ve received inquiries regarding the picture posted this morning where respirators were worn by those who visited the sinkhole site. The environmental contractors performing clean up are monitoring for VOCs at the site to protect their workers which is standard practice when encountering these work environments. Right at the sinkhole/slurry site, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) have been detected. OSHA’s standards for workers in these types of environments require individuals to wear respirators or other breathing apparatus when they encounter (and are exposed to) VOCs for long periods of times. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT DEQ is continuously monitoring the air within the community and there have been NO detected VOCs.
